Men Place First, Women Second at South Coast Conference Preview

LONG BEACH, Calif. --- The El Camino College men's and women's cross country teams came out hot to start the 2024 season as the men finished first and women finished second at the season-opening South Coast Conference Preview at Heartwell Park in Long Beach, Calif.
On the men's side, the Warriors had a dominant showing with 18 points, three away from a perfect score. Second-place and hosts Long Beach placed second with 43 points while L.A. Harbor was third with 80.
Alan Canales and Aaron Cohen took the top two spots on the four-mile track. Canales posted a time of 21:34.6 while Cohen was right behind him at 21:35.4.
Jamari Gibson of LBCC placed third at 22:10.1.
The Warriors would claim six of the next eight positions (unattached runners not included) with freshman Aiden Nakai placing fourth with a time of 22:25.1. Angel Yanez (22:34.6) and Ty McCormick (22:35.9) finished sixth and seventh overall while Bradley Barbosa (23:06.2), Juan Avellana (23:11.1) and Gavin Borges (23:13.9) placed 10th, 11th and 12th respectively.
Don York rounded out the Warriors' runners on the day with a time of 26:11.6.
On the women's side, the Warriors were edged for the win by L.A. Harbor, who scored 33 points. The Warriors tallied 36 as Elaine Dugmore (3rd, 22:04.8) and Arianna Hurtado (4th, 22:08.4) paced the team.
Freshman Ayla Barbosa had a solid debut with a time of 22:46.8 and Denise Delgado rounded out the top-10 finishers for the Warriors, placing 10th with a time of 23:55.1. Freshman Emily Gutierrez rounded out the Warriors' runners with a 12th place finish, crossing the finish line in 24:16.0.
The Warriors will return to action on Friday, Sept. 13 as they head to the Southern California Preview hosted by Chaffey College on its campus in Rancho Cucamonga.
