Cross Country Opens Season at Golden West Invite

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. --- The El Camino College cross country team began its season Friday at the Golden West Invite held at Central Park in Huntington Beach, Calif.

The men's team posted a seventh place finish out of 14 teams competing despite sitting out their expected top two runners in Josh Murray and top returner Yahia Luban.

Freshmen Anthony Gil and Arend Verfaille paced the Warriors as they finished in 11th and 13th place respectively. Gil posted a time of 21:55.6, missing out on a top-10 finish by a minute. Verfaille posted a 22:03.5.

Stephen Hanson recorded a 22:30.8 to place 25th with Shota Shimizu (27:12.1) and Anthony Fisher (28:27.8) rounding out the Warriors lineup.

On the women's side, the Warriors were paced by Megan Wright, who posted a time of 23:02.3. Raina Gomaa (24:07.7), Haidee Lopez (24:35.2), Cora Hesson (25:24.0) and Tea Takaoka (29:03.6) rounded out the women's finishers for ECC.

The Warriors will return to action on Friday as they take part in the San Diego Mesa Invite at NTC Park in San Diego, Calif.
