Warriors Drop Non-Conference Match to Cuesta

TORRANCE, Calif. – A lopsided third quarter proved to be the difference as El Camino College suffered a 14-8 non-conference defeat to Cuesta Thursday afternoon at the ECC Pool.

The Warriors were outscored 7-2 in the third period and that was what decided the match as the two teams played evenly in the other three quarters. Andrea Canchola and Ilene Guerrero each notched three goals for ECC while Sabrina Byrne and Solee Scarlet also scored.

For the Cougars, Gabi Fabri led all scorers with eight goals while Torie White and Kelly Ogan each added two goals.

The Warriors opened the scoring on their first possession of the match but the Cougars would outscore ECC 4-3 in the opening period for an early advantage. Both teams managed just one goal in the second period as Cuesta maintained its one-goal edge at the half.

It was the third period that decided the match. After Canchola opened the scoring to tie things up 5-5, the Cougars scored seven of the next eight goals in the quarter including five straight to put the match away.

Taylor Baird made six saves for ECC in the loss while Mia Viss notched 17 stops in net for Cuesta in three quarters. Piper Fluegge finished off the match in the fourth and made four saves.
