Honeycutt Has Career Night but Warriors Falter against Cerritos

TORRANCE, Calif. --- Sophomore Zariah Honeycutt had a career night but El Camino College suffered a 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-15) sweep at the hands of Cerritos College on Friday night in the South Coast Conference, South Division opener for both squads at the ECC Gym Complex.

Honeycutt smashed down 12 kills on 21 swings with just one errors for a .524 kill percentage in Friday's loss to the Falcons. It was more than double her previous career best of five kills, which she recorded two days ago in ECC's sweep over L.A. City.

Aireon Scott and Scheala Nielsen added five kills apiece and Perla Lopez dished out 23 assists with five digs in the loss.

For the Falcons, Lillianna Peterson led the way with 16 kills with Monserrat Rodriguez recording 12 kills and 12 digs for the double-double. Leeya Rubio dished out 33 assists and set the Falcons to a .363 attack percentage.

The Falcons ran away with the first set, outhitting ECC .389 to .184. They jumped out to a 4-1 lead and kept growing the advantage from there as they scored a double-digit win in the first.

The second set was more competitive as each team recorded 16 kills in the frame. The Warriors built a four-point lead early but the Falcons chipped away steadily until they finally caught ECC at 16-16 on an attack error from Lopez.

Peterson would give the Falcons their first lead with a kill to make it 20-19 and they never looked back, closing the set on a 7-0 run to take a 2-0 lead.

The Falcons jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the third but the Warriors cut the deficit to three points at 13-10. Unfortunately for ECC, the Falcons closed out the set on a 12-5 run to complete the sweep.

The Warriors will return to action on Wednesday evening with a road contest against Long Beach with first serve set for 6 p.m.
