Warriors Claim Third Place in Conference Tournament via Shootout

TORRANCE, Calif. – El Camino College played Long Beach City to a 1-1 draw but claimed third place via a 4-3 win in the shootout at the South Coast Conference Tournament on Thursday afternoon at Murdock Stadium.

The Warriors claimed third place at the SCC Tournament for the second time in the last three seasons after defeating Rio Hondo in 2022, also at ECC.

On Thursday, the Warriors had to erase a first-half deficit after the Vikings found pay dirt in the 21st minute. Abbie Campos sent a free kick from midfield into the box where Lorena Moreno headed the ball off a bounce and past Warriors keeper Jordan Stemberga for a 1-0 lead.

It took nearly an hour of game time but the Warriors finally pulled even in the 78th minute as Ashley Ruiz sent a perfect lead pass to Julia Camacho in the middle of the field. Camacho dribbled to the top of the box and then beat Vikings keeper Jackie Garibay to the far post to square the match at 1-1.

Neither team could break the deadlock and the squads headed directly to a shootout.

The Warriors elected to kick first and Ruby Colcol started things off with a successful try to the left. Bryanna Duarte would succeed for LBCC but then Bella Licata's attempt was stopped by Garibay. Lorena Moreno would make hers to put LBCC up 2-1.

Both players made their shot in the third round and Kaylee Garcia blasted her kick to the upper right corner to tie things up a 3-3.

Sydney Trump then sent her shot into the left post for LBCC, keeping things square headed to the fifth round.

Catherine Curwood-Wagner would come through for the Warriors to make it 4-3 and then Laila Alfadhiel hit another post aiming for the upper right corner, cementing the shootout in favor of the Warriors.

The Warriors will now await to find out their destination in the upcoming 3C2A Southern California Regional Playoffs.
