Warriors Open Season with Win over SD Mesa

TORRANCE, Calif. - The El Camino College Warriors women's soccer team opened up the 2024 season with a 2-1 win over San Diego Mesa.

All three goals of the game were scored during the first 23 minutes of match.

Claire Mahon scored in the first minute of the game after playing a give-and-go ball with Julia Camacho to put the Warriors up 1-0 early.

The Olympians tied the game up in the 12th minute after Stella Elisabeth Murphy looped a ball over the El Camino goalkeeper to make it 1-1. 

The Warriors took the lead for good after Sarahi Sanchez shot a ball at the SD Mesa keeper who let the ball slip out of her hands and over her head back into the net. 

The Olympians outshot the Warriors 21-to-12 for the game with 8 shots on goal compared to El Camino's 5 shots on goal.

The Warriors played two goalkeepers with Nevaeh Johnson drawing the start and making two saves. Jordan Stemberga played the second half and made five saves.

The Warriors will head on the road Thursday to take on Santa Monica. Kick-off is st for 1:30 p.m.
