Morey Plays Hero as Warriors Advance on Penalty Kicks

TORRANCE, Calif. --- Prior to Thursday evening's California Community College Women's Soccer Southern California Regional Play-In game, freshman backup goalkeeper McKenna Morey had played just four matches for the Warriors all season.

But that did not matter Thursday as the freshman hero stopped all but one shot on goal and scored the clinching penalty kick as the No. 19 seeded Warriors ousted No. 14 Santa Monica on penalty kicks after a 1-1 tie.

Morey made 14 saves on the night, allowing the Corsairs only one goal in the 105th minute. Her biggest moment would come in the penalty kick shootout as she beat the keeper to the right to secure a 5-4 win for the Warriors in the shootout to help the team advance to Saturday's first round.

The Warriors are slated to face No. 3 Cypress on Saturday at 2 p.m.

The match was scoreless through 90 minutes but the Warriors would break that drought in the 103rd minute as Angelica Taylor scored off an assist from Mia Hogentogler to give ECC a 1-0 lead.

But the Corsairs answered quickly as Abi Alban scored in the 105th to tie things up. Both teams were scoreless in the second overtime, necessitating the shootout.
