Four Players Tally Double Figures as Women’s Basketball Tops Citrus

CYPRESS, Calif. – El Camino College had four players score in double figures en route to a 67-53 win over Citrus in the opening round of the 35th Annual Lady Charger Classic hosted by Cypress College.

Salihah Bey led all scorers with 18 points and hauled in 14 rebounds to go with four assists for the Warriors (4-2) while Ashley Nguyen scored 14 points and dished out six assists. Makenna Peneueta scored 12 points with six assists and Jordan Hixon added 11 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to go with three steals and three blocks.

The Owls (3-4) were led by Kyannie Brown with 12 points and Diana Navarro added 11 points and four assists in the loss.

The second quarter proved to be the difference as the Warriors outscored the Owls 20-5 in the period after the teams were tied 12-12 after one quarter. In the second, the Warriors forced seven Citrus turnovers while also shooting 50 percent (8-for-16) from the field in the period. In contrast, the Owls hit just two shots in 14 attempts, missing all six 3-pointers they attempted in the period.

Bey had a double-double by halftime with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Overall, the Warriors outrebounded Citrus 48-37 in the game and scored 19 points off 18 Owls turnovers. They also dominated the inside, outscoring Citrus 44-24 in the paint.

The Warriors will face the winner of the Compton-Palomar contest on Saturday at 5 p.m. for a chance to play in the tournament championship game on Sunday.
