El Camino College had a rough first quarter and it proved to be too much to overcome in a 74-70 defeat against Fullerton College in a non-conference tilt Monday night at The Hornet's Nest.
The Warriors (3-2) were outscored 17-9 in the opening period as the team made just 3-of-12 from the field in the first 10 minutes. While the Hornets (2-2) did not fare much better with a 4-for-13 period, they did hit seven free throws in the first period and led by eight points after one.
It was a lead the Hornets would not relinquish despite the Warriors getting another double-double from Salihah Bey. The sophomore forward poured in a team-high 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in a losing effort. Jordan Hixon also had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds while Amber Rodriguez added 12 points off the bench.
The Hornets were led by Aliyah-Deen Ahmad and her 22 points off the bench. She hit 11 free throws on her own while the team was 18-for-29 from the charity stripe.
The Warriors will now head to Cypress to take part in the 35th Annual Lady Charger Classic. The Warriors open the tournament with a game against Citrus on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m.
