COSTA MESA, Calif. – For the second time this season, El Camino College and Ventura played a game that was decided by one possession. Unfortunately for the Warriors, they came up on the short end this time as they fell to Ventura 39-36 on Wednesday afternoon in the consolation bracket championship game of the Erin Tomlinson Coast Christmas Classic hosted by Orange Coast College.

In a defensive struggle, the Warriors (9-6) came up short as Hunter Noa's 3-pointer was offline as time expired in the game. The Warriors fell behind with 40 seconds left after Jasmyne Martin's 3-pointer for Ventura (11-5) broke a 36-36 tie.

The Warriors first chance to tie things off came on the next possession as Micaela Enriquez's 3-point attempt missed but the ball went out of bounds off a Ventura player, giving ECC an immediate chance to make up the miss. Noa fired a 3-pointer but missed and the Pirates grabbed the board.

The Warriors used up their last foul to give on the Pirates first inbounds attempt and on the next, Audrey Burke came up with a steal for the Warriors with 11 seconds left. The Warriors went up the court and Noa fired the game-tying attempt but missed, securing the win for Ventura.

Neither team shot well on Wednesday as the Warriors shot 29.8 percent from the field, outshooting the Pirates which shot just 22.4 percent. The teams connected on 25 field goals combined in the game. The difference came at the charity stripe as the Pirates went 13-for-18 from the free-throw line while the Warriors shot just five free throws, making two.

Noa finished the day with eight points and three rebounds for ECC while Enriquez led the way with nine points. Nao Shiota also scored eight in the loss. Martin led the Pirates with 11 points and Davina Del Castillo added 10 points.

The Warriors will return to action on Dec. 30 when they host Glendale at the ECC North Gym. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. and will be part of the first doubleheader of the season with men's basketball at the ECC North Gym.
