Warriors Battle No. 5 Pasadena City College but Fall 70-69 In SCC Crossover Match

TORRANCE, Calif. - The Warriors showed valiant effort on Friday night but ultimately fell in the last seconds, ending the game 70-69 against Pasadena City College. The Warriors held the lead going into the final quarter but the Lancers bounced back to take the game. The loss places the Warriors at 6-9 on the season.

The match proved challenging for El Camino as they struggled to keep a steady hold on the lead as Pasadena consistently answered back with buckets of their own. Sophomore guard Meghan Peneueta put the Warriors at 67-66 by successfully completing her free throws but the Lancers came back when a foul off El Camino resulted in free throws for them as well with 1:24 left on the clock. The ball was back in El Camino's court when Lancer Kaiyln Gideon fouled freshman forward Kayla Bibb who successfully converted both her free throws to put the Warriors a point ahead. With just a minute left in the game, Ilianna Blanc made her jump to settle the score at 70-69. From there the Warriors were unable to convert any of their shot attempts during the last thirty seconds, which resulted in the Lancers taking the game.

Peneueta led the Warriors in points (20) and rebounds (10) resulting in the only double-double for the Warriors that night, she was also 5-5 in her free throw attempts. Freshman guard Kasey Takahashi also ended the night with 20 points and made four of her eight three point attempts.

As the Warriors enter conference play, Coach Steve Shaw commented, "We've made progression, getting to where we want to be and now our primary focus is conference play."
