El Camino Women’s Basketball Wins the Irvine Valley College Tournament

IRVINE, Calif. - The 12th Annual Irvine Valley Women's Basketball Tournament took place on Thursday and ended Saturday at Irvine Valley College. 

The unranked El Camino Warriors faced the No. 6 seed Riverside City Tigers Thursday night, in which the Warriors won 60-58. The first quarter started slow for the Warriors with the Tigers outscoring the Warriors 14-10. In the second quarter, the Warriors increased their performance by outscoring the Tigers 20 to 8, sending the game in to break leading 34-27. The third quarter, the Tigers turned around their offense with Chiderah Uzowuru scoring 6 off of the bench. The Warriors closed the third quarter, 45-42. Even with the Tigers outscoring the Warriors in the third and fourth quarter, the Warriors kept their consistency throughout the game and beat the No. 9 ranked team. Meghan Peneueta had 17 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists.

On Friday, the Warriors faced the No. 15 seed and tournament host, Irvine Valley College Lasers in the semifinal contest. The Warriors started strong in the first quarter, up 12-9. The Lasers scored 15 points in the second quarter, closing out the half tied 24-24. The Warriors stayed consistent in the second half with Kasey and Kristy Takahashi contributing 9 points to the total score. The Warriors outscored the Lasers 19-7 in the fourth quarter. Kayla Bibb had 21 points, 10 rebounds and 2 assists. Kasey Takahashi had a big part in the teams' victory, scoring 16 points. The Warriors defeated the Lasers, 63-46.

The Warriors faced the No. 14 Long Beach City Vikings in the championship game of the tournament on Saturday. The game started even with the Warriors up 16-15 in the first quarter.  However, the Warriors outscored the Vikings 17-5 in the second. The Vikings were effective in the third and fourth quarter scoring 22 points, but it was not enough to defeat the Warriors. Meghan Peneueta and Kasey Takahashi scored 13 points total. The Warriors defeated the Vikings and won the tournament, 55-42.

Meghan Peneueta was named the MVP of the tournament and Kayla Bibb was selected as all-tournament. The Warriors (5-3) play in the Orange Coast College Tournament on December 19-21.
