Warriors Shine in Field Events at Pirate Invitational

VENTURA, Calif. --- El Camino College competed at the Pirate Invitational hosted by Ventura College on Saturday.

The highlight of the day came in the pole vault on both sides for the Warriors as the women's team swept the top-three spots on the podium while the men's side also claimed victory in the event.

Tilliana Wakefield-Carl claimed first place in the women's pole vault with a mark of 3.25 meters (10 feet, 8 inches), which tied her for the third best mark all time in ECC history. Valentina Amescua placed second with a mark of 2.95m (9 feet, 8 inches) to place her fourth all-time in ECC history and Misha Amir-Moazzami completed the podium sweep for the Warriors with a mark of 2.50m (8 feet, 2.5 inches).

For the men, Griffin Esperon took home first place with a personal-best mark of 4.11m (13 feet, 5.75 inches). His mark was more than a foot-and-a-half better than second-place finisher Colby Todd of Santa Barbara.

In addition to the pole vault, the Warriors also took home a win in the discus as Laighton Scott posted a throw of 40.43m (132 feet, 8 inches), more than 20 feet better than runner-up Samuel Mchtchian of East Los Angeles.

Other highlights of the meet included:

  • Savanna Mullins placed in a tie for third in the 800 meters with a personal-best time of 2:29.42.
  • Christine Adams posted a pair of fourth-place finishes in the 200m (28.12) and the 400m (1:04.53), both personal bests.
  • Curtis Williams finished fourth in the 110m high hurdles with a time of 16.38 seconds.

The Warriors will return to action this week at the Ron Kamaka Open, which begin with the multis on Thursday. Warriors decathlete Gunner Perez will be competing on Thursday and Friday in the multis while the rest of the team will compete on Saturday at Mount San Antonio College.
