Park Named Swimmer of the Year as Warriors Finish Third at Conference Championships

WALNUT, Calif. --- For the second straight year, sophomore Mia Park was named the South Coast Conference Women's Swimmer of the Year as the Warriors finished third in both the women's and men's competition at the South Coast Conference Championships at the Mt. SAC Aquatics Center.

During the three-day event, Park wiped out five SCC meet records including a new SCC meet and school record in the 1650 free on Saturday. Her time of 17:14.21 earned her the first title in the 1650 free for a Warriors swimmer since Ida Due in 2019. Park's time also broke Due's SCC record of 17:40.04 set in 2019. In addition, Park's time through the 1000-yard mark of her 1650 swim lowered her own school record in the 1000 with a time of 10:24.06.

Overall, Park set records in the 500 free (4:57.29), 400 individual medley (4:31.67) and the 1650. She also set records as a member of the Warriors' 400 and 800 free relay teams as she set the new SCC mark in the 100 free (51.82) and the 200 free (1:51.30), the latter breaking her own record that she set last year.

In two years, Park closed out her conference career holding seven SCC records after setting the marks in the 100 fly and 200 fly as a freshman last year.

In addition to Park, women's head coach Shelby Haroldson was named the SCC Women's Co-Head Coach of the Year as the Warriors placed third overall with 435.50 points, placing behind Long Beach (923.50) and Mt. SAC (731.0).

The Warriors also nailed down two other conference titles on the final day of competition. Iyanah Samayoa lowered her own school record in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:20.68 to earn the conference title in the event.  

The Warriors final conference title of the weekend came in the final event of the competition as the men's 400 free relay squad of Fin Kircher, Alex Yousefi, Ryan Song and Justin Rash won the event with a time of 3:07.04.

Other medals collected on the final day of the SCC Championships included:

  • Yousefi: Second Place in the 200 backstroke (1:55.30).
  • Song: Second Place in the 200 breaststroke (2:10.02).
  • Kircher: Second Place in the 200 butterfly (1:53.24).
  • Rash: Third Place in the 100 free (46.68)
  • Women's 400 free relay team of Park, Diana Nguyen, Raina Henty-Dodd, Iyanah Samayoa earns third place (3:40.63).

The Warriors will now wrap up the 2024 season at the 3C2A State Championships which will be held May 2-4 at Orange Coast College.
