Warriors Come Out Hot on Day One of Conference Championships

WALNUT, Calif. --- El Camino College opened the 2024 South Coast Conference championships with a bang on Thursday, recording a number of victories and breaking numerous school records after the first day of competition.

The team's first victory came on the men's side in the 200 freestyle medley relay as the team of Alex Yousefi, Justin Rash, Vincenzo Crivello and Fin Kircher took down the final with a time of 1:24.74, setting a new ECC record by two seconds. It was also a new SCC record, edging the old mark by just .04.

Mia Park was next to take the stage as the sophomore continued her dominance in the 500 freestyle. She broke her own school record with a 4:57.29 on Thursday, the only sub-five minute time in the event and clearing the competition by nearly 26 seconds.

Iyanah Samayoa continued the winning train on the women's side as she won the 200 individual medley, finishing in 2:10.16. It was the second fastest time in school history and she won the event by more than seven seconds.

Back on the men's side, the Warriors recorded a sweep of the top two spots in the 200 IM as Kircher won the conference title with a time of 1:52.26, setting a new ECC record and breaking the old mark by more than two seconds. Meanwhile, teammate Ryan Song took the silver with a time of 1:56.09, edging out Tony Montes of Long Beach City by 0.28.

Other school records that were broken on Thursday included:

  • Rash set a new school record in the 50 free prelims with a time of 21.16 and then proceeded to break that record in the finals with a time of 21.08 to take the silver in the event.
  • Women's 400 medley relay (Diana Nguyen, Samayoa, Park, Raina Henty-Dodd): The quartet took home the silver behind winners and hosts Mount San Antonio. The Warriors finished in 4:02.92 to set the new ECC record.
  • Men's 400 medley relay (Kircher, Song, Yousefi, Rash): The team set a new school record with a time of 3:28.26 and finished third overall at the SCC Championships.
  • Kircher's time in the 100 backstroke during the medley relay was also a new ECC record as he posted a time of 51.83.

The Warriors will be back in action for 16 more events (Eight men's, Eight women's) on Friday at Mt. SAC. The prelims are set to begin at 10 a.m. with the finals slated to go beginning at approximately 4 p.m.
