Samayoa Breaks Two Longtime Records as Warriors Open Swim Season

TORRANCE, Calif. --- Freshman Iyanah Samayoa made quite the impression in her El Camino College debut, breaking a pair of 40-year-old school records as the Warriors opened the 2024 swim season in the ECC Triple Distance Invite on Saturday at the ECC Aquatics Center.

Samayoa won the 100-breastroke with a mark of 1:07.88 while taking the 200-breastroke with a time of 2:29.35. She broke ECC Hall-of-Famer Sue Saatkamp's records in the 100-breastsroke and 200-breastroke, which Saatkamp set in April 1981. She set the 100-breastroke record (1:08.38) on April 30, 1981 at the state championships one week after setting the 200-breastroke (2:29.50) on April 25, 1981 at the conference championships.

In addition to making ECC history, Samayoa also set a new meet and pool record in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 32.01.

The women's relay teams also set new meet and pool records in the 200-medley relay with the squad of Diana Nguyen, Samayoa, Mia Park and Raina Henty-Dodd finishing in 1:56.36, a mark that now ranks sixth in ECC All-Time History.

The four ladies also set a new meet and pool record in the 200-freestyle relay with a time of 1:44.39.

On the men's side, Ryan Song made history in the 100, 200, and 300-yard IM races as he set meet records in each event. He finished the 100 IM with a time of 56.21, which also ranks third in ECC All-Time history. Song also posted times of 2:05.95 and 3:32.51 in the 200 IM and 300 IM races respectively.

The men's 200-medley relay team of Fin Kircher, Song, Justin Rash and Alex Yousefi also set a new meet record with a time of 1:41.26.

Overall, both teams took first place in the meet with the women scoring 112 total points while the men finished with 152 points.

The Warriors will return to action this Friday for the SCC Pentahlon at the ECC Aquatics Center with the event slated to begin at 10 a.m.
