Park Named Swimmer of the Year at South Coast Conference Championships

MONTEREY PARK, Calif. --- Freshman Mia Park was named the 2023 South Coast Conference Swimmer of the Year after a record setting weekend at the SCC Championships held from April 20-22 at the East Los Angeles College Swim Stadium in Monterey Park, Calif.

The Warriors newcomer capped off an incredible run during the season with a record-setting performance at the SCC Championships. Park set three new meet records in the 100 butterfly (56.38), 200 butterfly (2:07.17) and 200 freestyle (1:52.31). She also set new school records in the 50 free with her leg of the 200 free relay (24.13), the aforementioned 200 fly and the 100 free (52.43).

Park won the conference title in the 100 fly, 200 fly and 500 free (5:02.89). Her finish in the 500 free was the second best time in ECC history.

As for the team results, the women placed third overall with 447 points while the men placed fourth overall with 457 points. Mount San Antonio claimed the SCC titles for both the women (823 points) and the men (908 points).

Some other highlights from the SCC Championships included:

  • The men's 400 medley relay team of Alex Yousefi (Backstroke, 56.47), Steven Olsen (Breasstroke, 1:02.97), Justin Rash (Butterfly, 53.51) and Gary Bellingham (Freestyle, 49.50) secured a third place finish with a total time of 3:42.45.
  • The women's 400 medley relay team of Diana Nguyen (Backstroke, 1:07.47), Gwyneth Russo (Breaststroke, 1:18.33), Park (Butterfly, 57.42) and Leiana Gonzalez (Freestyle, 58.73) placed second in the finals with a time of 4:21.95.
  • The men's 200 free relay team (Bellingham, Myles Fourmy, Yousefi, Rash) finished third with a time of 1:27.89, which is also the third fastest time in school history.
  • The women's 200 free relay team (Park, Lauren Miranda, Nguyen, Gonzalez) finished second in the event with a time of 1:45.02.

The Warriors will now await and see who will qualify for the CCCAA State Championships. The announcement is expected on Tuesday. The CCCAA State Championships will be held on Friday and Saturday at the ELAC Swim Stadium
