Men Finish Third, Women Fourth at South Coast Conference Championships

MONTEREY PARK, Calif. --- The El Camino College swimming and diving finished the conference season with nine spots on the podium as they competed at the South Coast Conference Championships on April 21-23 at East Los Angeles College.

On the men's side, the Warriors finished third overall with 485 points. Long Beach City scored 782 points, edging Mount San Antonio (780) for the 2022 SCC team title. On the women's side, the Warriors placed fourth with 331 points. Long Beach (725) secured the team title with Mt. SAC (663) and Cerritos (461) completed the podium.

For the Warriors, Melissa Brill tied for the best finish on both the men's and women's side. She finished second in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 19:12.56.

On the men's side, the Warriors performances were highlighted by Matthew Oswald as the freshman from Peninsula High School scored a second-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke. Oswald finished with a time of 2:06.77, edging LBCC's Rory Kleven (2:07.49). Matthew Neoh of Mt. SAC scored the top spot with a time of 1:56.51.

Gary Bellingham was the lone Warriors swimmer to score multiple individual medals, scoring a pair of third-place finishes. In the 100-yard breaststroke, Bellingham just missed a silver medal as he finished with a time of 1:00.88, edged slightly for second by Jack Fitzpatrick of LBCC (1:00.55). Bellingham would score another breaststroke bronze medal in the 200-yard event, finishing with a time of 2:16.54.

The relay teams on the men's side also took home some hardware as the 200-yard Free Relay squad of Daniel Fuentes, Myles Fourmy, Oswald and Bellingham took home the bronze medal with a time of 1:31.24, edging the Cerritos squad (1:31.28) for a spot on the podium.

The same four athletes made up the 400-yard Medley Relay team that scored a third-place finish with a time of 3:48.09. The 400-yared Freestyle team of Bellingham, Fourmy, Hudson Brann and Fuentes also scored a bronze medal with a time of 3:19.67.

Along with the medalists from this weekend, diver Tyler Trejo had already finished on the podium during the CCCAA SoCal Diving Regionals. He finished second in the conference on the 3-meter board (146.30) and third on the 1-meter board (134.20).

The Warriors will now wrap up the 2022 season at the CCCAA Swimming and Diving State Championships hosted by ELAC on May 5-7.
