Men and Women Score Runner-Up Finishes at Conference Championships

The El Camino College men's and women's swim teams both flirted with winning the South Coast Conference Championship but fell just short, scoring runner-up finishes at the Mount San Antonio Aquatics Complex.

The Warriors had great showings during the three-day event as the men held a three-point lead going into the final day of competition before being overtaken by Mt. SAC on the last day.

While the men did not score a conference title in any individual event, they managed to place second with an overall score of 694.5 points, just behind Mt. SAC's 726 score and way ahead of Pasadena's 539 third-place score.

On the women's side, the Warriors finished second with an overall score of 537 behind Mt. SAC's winning score of 717 points.

Clare Siverts and Cindy Ngo won individual conference titles with Siverts scoring the win in the 400 IM. Ngo pulled in a pair of titles, winning the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events while Athena Katsouridis swept the diving events for a pair of conference titles.

After the event, the Warriors received more accolades as Corey Stanbury was named the SCC Men's Swim Coach of the Year while Laurie Dawdy earned the SCC Diving Coach of the Year.

The Warriors swept the top three spots in the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events at the SCC Championships and Katsouridis was awared the SCC Diver of the Year Award.

In addition, the Warriors had seven athletes qualify for the CCCAA State Championships, which are set to take place May 3-5 at De Anza College.
