Katsouridis, Liu Qualify for State, Ishizawa Earns Alternate Spot

Athena Katsouridis and Jean Liu posted solid marks at the 2018 Southern California Diving Championships hosted by El Camino College on Friday afternoon.

The pair placed in the top-8 overall at the event this past weekend and qualified for both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events at the upcoming CCCAA State Championships. Anna Ishizawa earned an alternate spot in the 3-meter event after finishing ninth overall in the event.

In the 1-meter event, Katsouridis posted a 173.30 to finish sixth overall and claim the top spot amongst South Coast Conference divers. Liu was right behind her teammate in seventh place overall and second in conference with a score of 162.45. Ishizawa finished third in the ECC with a score of 127.45 but she fell nine points shy of securing one of the two alternate slots in the event.

Alejandra Gomez of Cypress College claimed the top spot with a score of 246.65.

In the 3-meter dive, Katsouridis finished fifth overall with a 197.10, once again taking the top spot in conference. Liu also came in right behind her teammate in sixth place overall with a 189.70. Ishizawa claimed the first alternate spot as she placed ninth overall with a score of 137.25.

The CCCAA State Championships begin May 3 at De Anza College.
