Softball Extends Series but Runs Out of Gas Against Mounties

WALNUT, Calif. --- No. 5 El Camino College used some late heroics to force a winner-take-all game three on Saturday but ran out of gas as its season came to an end against No. 4 Mount San Antonio in the 3C2A Super Regionals at the Mt. SAC Softball Field.

GAME TWO: WARRIORS 4, MOUNTIES 3

The Warriors were six outs away from seeing their season come to an end in game two but scored three times in the sixth inning to overcome a two-run deficit and held on to force a decisive game three.

Trailing 3-1 going into the sixth, the Warriors got a leadoff single from Cheyenne Navarro and then Malia Martin put runners on the corners with a single of her own. Cerise Cervantes would follow with another hit to load the bases and then Julianna Vasquez singled in Navarro to trim the deficit to 3-2.

Lilly Lewis would tie things up with a sacrifice fly and then Emily Esparza singled to load the bases again with one away. Madilyn Radeke would hit another sac fly to give the Warriors the lead.

Kat Gutierrez handled the rest as she stranded the game-tying run on third in the bottom of the sixth and on second base in the seventh to secure the win and force a third game.

Gutierrez got the victory as she tossed 6.2 innings of relief, allowing two runs on eight hits.

GAME THREE: MOUNTIES 7, WARRIORS 0

The Warriors offense ran out of gas in the final game as they only got three runners into scoring position against Mounties hurler Alyssa Rubalcava, who tossed a complete game for the Mounties and allowed just four hits.

Meanwhile, the Warriors held the Mounties to just one run in the first four innings but the hosts put up four runs in the fifth to put the game out of reach.

The Warriors wrap up the season with a 31-14 overall record. It is the fifth time the Warriors have recorded 30 or more wins in a season under head coach Jessica Rapoza, who became the first ECC head coach to ever reach 250 career wins earlier in the season. She currently sits with 397 career wins counting her five seasons as head coach at Santa Ana College.
