TORRANCE, Calif. – Fiona Mutu's solo home run broke a scoreless tie and kick-started the El Camino College offense in a 4-0 victory over visiting Compton Friday afternoon at the ECC Softball Field.
Mutu led off the fifth inning with a towering blast that cleared the fence and sailed into the construction area to put the Warriors (30-8, 11-0) up 1-0. It was Mutu's only hit of the game.
After four innings of zeroes on the board, Mutu's bomb kicked off a three-run flurry for the Warriors in the fifth as Ashley Machado drove in a run on an RBI groundout and then another run crossed on an error with the bases loaded.
Diamond Lewis led the offense as she went 3-for-4 with two doubles, one RBI and a run scored. Karla Calderon and Amie Crawford each went 2-for-3 with Crawford scoring twice.
It's all the run support Maisie Weishoff would need as the pitcher shut down the Tartars (14-29, 0-11) en route to a complete-game shutout. She allowed seven hits and struck out seven.
The Warriors have now recorded 30 wins this season; the third time the team has reached that mark in the four seasons under head coach Jessica Rapoza. The team will close out their five-game week Saturday afternoon with a road game at Cypress.
