Weishoff Brilliant as Late Surge Leads Warriors Past Long Beach

Trailing by one with three outs left, El Camino College put together a late rally to score a 6-4 comeback victory at Long Beach City in a South Coast Conference, South Division contest Tuesday afternoon.

The Warriors scored their seventh straight win and remained perfect in conference in dramatic fashion as they plated three runs in the top of the seventh to take a two-run lead.

Diamond Lewis went 2-for-2 with two doubles and a RBI while Alena De La Torre was 2-for-4 with a run scored and RBI. Alyssa Wing was 1-for-3 with the game-tying double in the seventh. Maisie Weishoff picked up her third straight win in the circle, tossing four and 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. She allowed just one hit and struck out two to keep the Warriors in the game.

The Warriors took the early lead in the second as Machado smacked a two-run single to center to put the team up 2-0.

But the Vikings answered in their half of the inning with three runs on RBI singles from Samantha Ontiveros and Elena Vizcarra.

A solo home run from Raven Agapay in the third inning gave the Vikings a two-run lead. They had an opportunity to tack on to the lead in the third as they had runners on first and second with two outs but Weishoff came into the game to relieve starter Clarissa Chiquete and got a groundout to end the threat.

Weishoff would retire seven straight batters right out of the bullpen and 13 of the 14 batters she faced, allowing just a leadoff single in the sixth inning.

That was pivotal for the Warriors as the offense began the comeback in the fourth inning on an RBI double from Lewis to make it 4-3. In the seventh, Annie Adamos led off the inning with a single and then Wing tied things up with a double, scoring pinch-runner Ronni Silas to make it 4-4.

De La Torre followed with a single to left field to score Wing with the go-ahead run. De La Torre would steal second and then, with two outs, Karla Calderon added some insurance as she reached on an error in right field, allowing De La Torre to score to make it 6-4.

Weishoff retired the side in order in the seventh to secure the victory and keep the Warriors unbeaten in conference play.

The Warriors will return home on Thursday to host Rio Hondo in an SCC Inter-Division game at the ECC Softball Field. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
