Machado, Robinson Homer but Warriors Can’t Hold Off Mounties

El Camino College was six outs away from scoring a big road win at Mount San Antonio but the Mounties put together a big sixth inning and used it to get past the Warriors, 4-3, Tuesday afternoon in Walnut, Calif.

The Warriors led by two runs heading to the bottom of the fifth and by one going to the bottom of the sixth but the Mounties put up a crooked number in their half of the frame to take the lead for good and down the Warriors.

Diamond Lewis continued her stellar season with the bat for ECC as she went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored on a day where hits were limited for the Warriors. Ashley Machado and Kassidy Robinson each went 1-for-3 with a solo home run on the day to lead the Warriors offense.

Maisie Weishoff went six innings in the circle for the Warriors and allowed four earned runs on nine hits. She walked one and struck out two in the loss.

For the Mounties, Carissa Felix led the way as she went 2-for-3 with two RBI and Vicky Gutierrez also went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Briana Wheeler picked up the complete-game victory as she allowed three runs on five hits, two of them homers. She walked one and struck out five.

The Warriors struck first in the top of the second as Robinson led off the frame with a home run to make it 1-0. It stayed that way until the fifth when the Warriors scratched out a run with a two-out rally.

Lewis doubled to right-center and then Annie Adamos stepped up and singled down the left-field line, plating Lewis to make it a 2-0 lead for ECC.

The Mounties bats responded in their half of the fifth as Felix led off the inning with a single. Ciara Granado then reached on an error and both runners advanced to scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. Felix would then score on a fielder's choice but Amanda Esquivel was caught trying to steal second to end the frame.

After the Warriors went down in order in their half of the sixth, the Mounties broke it open with a three-spot in their half of the inning.

Machado tried to start a comeback for the Warriors as she belted a two-out homer to cut the deficit to one but Lewis flied out to left to end the game and the Warriors came up one run short.

The Warriors return to action Thursday afternoon as they host Pasadena at the ECC Softball Field. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
