Men’s Water Polo Comeback Effort Falls Short against Mounties

TORRANCE, Calif. – Trailing by six goals entering the fourth quarter, El Camino College mounted a furious rally but came up just short in a 15-12 South Coast Conference loss to Mount San Antonio Wednesday afternoon at the ECC Pool.

The Warriors (3-5, 0-3) played the Mounties tight early, trailing 3-2 after one quarter. But the Mounties tallied six in the second period to take a 9-4 advantage heading into the break.

The deficit was 12-6 as the teams headed to the fourth and that's when the Warriors made their move, scoring the first three goals of the period to trim the Mounties' lead in half. The Mounties broke the streak with a goal but Matthew Thorne and Logan Doersam came right back with a goal apiece to make it 13-11 with 2:26 left in the match.

But the Warriors would get no closer as the Mounties notched a critical power-play goal 32 seconds later and added an insurance goal with under a minute left to squash the Warriors comeback hopes.

Thorne led the team with six goals on the day while Kyle Thorne added four. Seth Ulrich scored the other goal of the day for ECC while Brandon Soto made 11 saves in the loss.

The Warriors will return to action this weekend at the South of the Border Tournament hosted by San Diego Mesa and San Diego Miramar.
