Hannemann’s Huge Night Sparks Men’s Volleyball Victory over Santiago Canyon

TORRANCE, Calif. --- Travis Hannemann had the best night of his El Camino College career as the Warriors downed Santiago Canyon 3-1 (25-16, 24-26, 25-23, 25-21) on Friday night at the ECC Gym Complex.

Hannemann hammered a career-best 28 kills on 52 swings with eight errors for a .385 attack percentage. He recorded almost half of the team's 68 kills on the night as Vladimir Kubr dished out 61 assists and set the team to a .333 attack percentage in the win.

Cameron Grammatica led the Hawks with 17 kills on 43 swings with nine errors. He was the only player on the Hawks to reach double figures in kills.

Along with Hannemann, the Warriors also got contributions from Dylan Garcia with 14 kills and two blocks while Mark Antonov recorded 13 kills and tied for the team lead with eight digs. Ethan Morgan added nine kills while attacking at a .316 clip and led the team with five blocks (one solo).

The Warriors used a 7-2 scoring spurt to turn a close opening set into an easy win to open the match. But the second set was a different story as neither team could pull away from the other as neither side held a lead of more than three points after the Hawks erased an 8-4 deficit to cut it to one. The Warriors were able to get one set point after an attack error by Grammatica broke a 23-23 tie. But the Warriors could not close out the Hawks as Jaden Evangelista tied it up with a kill and then a Brendan Munda ace gave the Hawks a set point of their own, which they won after Hannemann committed one of his eight attack errors.

In the third, the Warriors pulled away late to take a 24-19 lead but the Hawks stayed scrappy and hung around, trimming the deficit to 24-23 thanks to three straight kills from Grammatica and an attack error by Garcia.

But Morgan put an end to any comeback fantasies as he smashed down a set from Kubr to secure the set and give ECC a 2-1 lead.

In the fourth, the teams went back and forth again but the Warriors again found themselves with four match points after taking a 24-20 lead. Evangelista was able to erase one with a kill but Hannemann put an exclamation point on his big night with the match-sealing kill to give ECC the win.

The Warriors will now return to action on Wednesday night to wrap up their current four-game home swing as they host Moorpark to begin Western State Conference action. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
