Warriors Smash Cubs At Home in SCC Tournament Semifinal

TORRANCE, Calif. - The El Camino College Warriors men's soccer team defeated Los Angeles City College 5-0 at home in their South Coast Conference Tournament semifinal matchup on Tuesday afternoon at Warrior Field.

The Warriors (18-1, 9-0 SCC) will head to their first South Coast Conference Championship game and take on the winner of the other semifinal game between Mt. Sac and Long Beach.

Two Warriors scored braces for the day as Marvin Gamez scored the first and third goal of the game and Diego Garcia scored the second and fourth goal of the game.  Juan Gomez also scored for the Warriors. The Warriors outshot the Cubs 26-to-5 for the game.

The Warriors opened the scoring in the sixth minute of play on a set piece play.  Charlie Cazares played the ball down the right side to Bogart Roca.  Roca crossed the ball back to Gamez who took a touch and launched a ball to the upper right 90 for his 19th goal of the season. 

The Warriors added their second goal in the 27th minute.  Jovanny Mejia had a shot blocked inside the box and the rebound fell to Diego Garcia who shot the rebound into the lower left of the keeper's net to make it a 2-0 game.

Gamez worked his magic again in the 51st minute for his second goal of the day and 20th goal of the season.  After some quick passing from Alex Salas and Steven Alvarenga, they crossed the ball to Gamez on the other side of the box and he chipped the keeper on the volley with his right foot into the net. 

Juan Gomez joined the scoring in the 84th minute.  After the Warriors earned a freekick from about 35 yards out.  Gomez curled a left footed strike into the right upper 90 past the keeper for his second goal of the year. 

The Warriors added their fifth and final goal in the 85th minute.  Jovanny Mejia stole the ball off a LACC pass from the center back to the midfield.  Mejia quickly played a through ball to Diego Garcia who rounded the keeper to his right and found the angle for the goal for his second goal of the day.

Donovan Palomares kept the clean sheet and only had one save to make for the game. Palomares posted his 11th shutout of the season. 

The Warriors will head to Long Beach City College on Friday for the South Coast Conference Championship Game.  Kick-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
