Santana Nets a Pair as Warriors Blank Irvine Valley
TORRANCE, Calif. – Sophomore Jason Santana provided all the offense El Camino College would need Friday afternoon in a 2-0 victory over Irvine Valley College at Murdock Stadium.
The Warriors (2-2-1) prevailed in a match where they were outshot by a wide margin in the second half thanks to a solid effort from goalkeeper Cesar Amezcua, who recorded his first clean sheet of the season by turning away eight shots on target by the Lasers (1-2-1).
As for Santana he got the Warriors started in the 55th minute with a blast past Lasers goalkeeper Braden Peters. The forward took a pass from Cristian Guevara inside the box on the far side. Santana proceeded to beat his defender and then fired a left-footed strike past Peters to the far side and into the back of the net to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.
Santana didn't wait long for his second tally of the game, finding the back of the net in the 59th minute. Reyes Jaimes set up the goal with a brilliant play at the top of the box, using a back-heel pass to find Santana, who unleashed another rocket past the keeper from 20 yards out to put the Warriors up 2-0.
The Lasers had their chances but could not secure a goal in the match. In the 26th minute, the Warriors turned the ball over in their own box and Toby Waterman beat Amezcua with a shot to the far post. But defender Stephen Vincent was able to recover to the goal line and knock the ball away to save a goal and keep the match scoreless in the first half.
In the 83rd minute, the Lasers had another golden opportunity as they were awarded a penalty kick. Amezcua guessed right but Waterman went the other way and had an empty net to work with. But his shot went wide of the right post and the game remained scoreless. The Lasers would not have another scoring chance in the match.
The Warriors will return to action on Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. as they welcome Moorpark to Murdock Stadium.
