Keywhon Powns Drives Warriors to 98-86 Win Over Los Angeles Harbor College

TORRANCE, Calif. - The Warriors battled to the finish on Friday night to earn their first win of conference play. El Camino (10-11) hosted rivals Los Angeles Harbor College (7-14) and the visitors did not easily give up the feat. The Warriors rallied to end the night in their favor, 98-86. Keywhon Powns boosted the Warriors with 30 points and was a rebound shy of earning a triple double. Jamal Heckard came up second in points.

The Seahawks were first to take the lead and the Warriors trailed behind them for the majority of the first half. Brandon Harris gained a rebound off a missed shot by the Seahawks which then found its way to Heckard who finished the play with a three pointer, putting the Warriors up by two points. From there it was touch-and-go as both teams continued to score, neither able to take a full lead which ended the first half at 45.

With the game tied at 47, the Warriors turned up the heat to take the lead, outshooting the Seahawks 53-41 in the second half. The visitors began to grow relentless as the clock ticked down and a foul by Seahawk Sean Thoms with only two second left gave the Warriors free throws which were successfully made by Powns, ending the night 98-86.

Five Warriors scored in the double digits. Powns went 11-15 within the paint while Heckard went 4-9 in three pointers. Tarron Wiley was 5-9 with field goals and made three of his five three point attempts, registering 14 points for the Warriors. Both Martyre Demarco and Ahmad Ope-Onilenla earned 10 points with Ope-Onilenla earning seven rebounds.

The win puts the Warriors at 3-1 in conference, Coach Robert Uphoff explained, "We have been in such a slide that any win is a good win. Defending our home court is important. The conference is up for grabs as everyone is beating each other up. We needed some confidence going into wednesday's game"
