Men’s Basketball Tops Santa Ana College in Thrilling Double Overtime

Torrance, Calif. - The second day of the Tournament of Champions hosted by El Camino College (4-1) witnessed a lot of nail-biting action, including the Warriors victory over Santa Ana College (1-4) in an exciting double overtime game. The Dons came close to taking the win but freshman guard Jamal Heckard helped lead the Warriors into a 124-115 victory over Santa Ana.

The Dons took the lead early on while the Warriors fought hard to catch up, entering the second half of the match down by 20 points. With 11:37 left in regulation time, the Warriors began to gain momentum with freshman guard Kameron Smith getting 1-1 to put the Warriors only eight points behind the Dons.

Trailing only by one point, sophomore guard Martyre Demarco gave the Warriors the push they needed to get ahead. With only 20 seconds left on the clock, Demarco made an excellent three point shot from the right corner after receiving a pass from sophomore Brandon Guerrero. But the Dons refused to let up and countered with a layup by Andrew Harper to take them into overtime.

El Camino was down by three points with :57 left in the 1st overtime but Che Madrid took the game into double overtime with his three.

The Warriors cranked out the speed and agility, smashing in six points consecutively. Heckard closed out the game when he successfully made his free throw attempts after a foul by Jason Walker and the game ended shortly after with a final score of 124-115.

Heckard recorded a double-double with a total of 34 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore guard Brandon Harris also had a good game making five of his nine three point attempts and earning 21 points.

The tournament continues at El Camino Saturday, Nov. 19th at 7 p.m. when they take on Los Angeles Trade Tech.
