El Camino College Mourns Loss of Sladen Mohl

It is with a very heavy heart that we share news that El Camino College student and baseball team member Sladen John Mohl was killed in a traffic accident involving three cars Thursday evening in Torrance.  Sladen was a pedestrian and died at the scene.

Sladen was majoring in Kinesiology and was the starting catcher for the Warriors.  Prior to attending El Camino, Sladen redshirted one year at Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho.  Prior to that he played three years on the varsity squad at South Anchorage High School in Anchorage, Alaska.  He played catcher, third base, and second base for the Wolverines in the Cork Inlet Conference.  His team was recognized as the first team ALL-CIC and won the Big Stitch Award (batting title).

While at El Camino, Sladen played in 29 games for the Warriors, starting all of them as the team's catcher. He had 20 hits, scored 15 runs and caught for the top pitching staff in the state.  With Sladen at catcher, ECC pitchers have posted a 2.18 team ERA for the top mark in the California Community College Athletics Association.

"We are devastated by the tragic loss of Sladen Mohl. He exemplified the very best of this college. He was a joy to work with and be around. Our hearts are with Sladen's family at this difficult time," said Colin Preston, ECC Athletic Director.

"We are all deeply saddened by this tragedy. Sladen was an excellent baseball player but an even better teammate and individual. He was kind, positive and brought smiles to everyone he came in contact with. Our hearts are with his family at this moment. Sladen will be missed but never forgotten. Once a Warrior, always a Warrior," said Nate Fernley, ECC Baseball Head Coach.

Sladen is survived by his parents and four siblings.

SLADEN MOHL MEMORIAL FUND

El Camino College baseball head coach Nate Fernley has started the "Sladen Mohl Memorial Fund" to aid Sladen's family in covering upcoming costs and arrangements.

"Sladen Mohl was a beloved friend, son, family member and teammate to many people across the country. Sladen left us far too early, but has left a life-long impact on every individual that he has come in contact with. We are raising funds to help support his loving family with the upcoming costs and arrangements. Sladen was from Alaska so we would like to bring him home. All donations will be going directly to Sladen's mother for the expenses."
