Warriors Lose First Game of the Season in Extra Innings

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - After winning the series the previous night in exciting fashion, the Warriors fell one game short of matching the 2017 squad's 8-0 start to the season after falling to Bakersfield 4-3 in extra innings on Saturday afternoon.  

El Camino (7-1) offense tied the game in the 7th inning but they could not push another run across the board despite having the chances to do so.  Bakersfield (7-3) ultimately prevailed in the bottom of the 11th inning after a one-out walk by Landn Kauk and then Zach Williams drove him in the next at-bat.  

Max Pappas drew the start for the Warriors and tossed 8 innings giving up 3 runs on six hits, 2 walks, and fanning three batters.  Garrett Spicuzza pitched the final innings for the Warriors and went 2.1 innings giving up two hits, one run, and one walk.

Spencer Palmer led the Warriors with two hits.  Brett Gieseke, Sladen Mohl, and Taishi Nakawake each picked up one hit for the offense. El Camino left 10 men on base today compared to Bakersfield's 5 men left on base.  

Bakersfield struck first in the first inning after Landn Kauk drove in Ashanti Ross on a RBI groundout.  

The Warriors took the lead in the 4th inning after Spencer Long led the inning off with a walk.  Palmer singled in the next at-bat and both runners advanced on a passed ball. Long scored on a RBI sac fly by Matt Beserra and Palmer scored on the same play on an error by the Bakersfield first basemen to make it a 2-1 game for the Warriors.

The Renegades however regained the lead in the 6th inning.  Zac Williams scored Ross and Kauk on a 2-RBI double down the the RF line to make it a 3-2 game for Bakersfield.

The Warriors tied the game up in the 7th inning at 3-3.  Jimmy Galicia drew a two out walk and Mohl hit a base hit up the middle.  Galicia advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Nakawake followed up with his own base hit to center field to score Galicia to tie the game.  But Ty Conrad struck out with runners on 1st and 2nd to end the inning.

In the 10th inning, the Warriors had a chance to score but they fell short.  Palmer and Beserra both picked up one-out walks. Brett Gieseke hit into a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners with two outs, but Joseph Borges struck out to end the frame.  

The Warriors will look to shake off their first loss of the season and return to action on the road on Wednesday at LA Mission. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
