Warriors Offense Erupts for Conference Opening Win over Pasadena City College

TORRANCE, Calif. - El Camino College shelled out a season-high seventeen hits in their 11-0 SCC conference opener win over the Pasadena City College Lancers on Thursday afternoon at Warrior Field.

Matthew Beserra and Jose Ruiz Jr. led the Warriors (9-7, 1-0) offensive charge against the Lancers (9-7, 0-1).  Ruiz Jr. went a perfect 4-4 at the plate with one run scored and one RBI.  Beserra went 4-6 at the plate with four RBI's.  

On the mound, two Warrior pitchers combined to shutout the Lancers.  Daniel Alvarez picked up the win, tossing seven innings and allowing six hits.  He walked three and struck out two players for his third win of the season.   Nathan Draves came into pitch the final two innings for the Warriors.  Draves pitched solid in relief allowing only one hit and one walk for the Lancers.

Both teams traded zeros across the scoreboard in the first three innings, but it was in the 4th inning when the Warriors exploded for seven runs off seven hits.  Ruiz Jr. led off the inning by being hit by a pitch, Jerry Granillo then singled to left field and Ruiz Jr. advanced to third on the play.  Spencer Long hit into a fielder's choice at 3B and Ruiz Jr. was caught in a rundown between third base and home plate, which allowed Granillo to reach third base and Long to reach second base.  Taishi Nakawake would walk to load the bases.  Diego Alarcon hit the opening scoring RBI single through the left side to make it 1-0.

Jordan Folgers then singled to CF to make it a 2-0 game.  Spencer Palmer then had a bases loaded walk to make it a 3-0 game.  Beserra would hit a two-run RBI single to right field to make it 5-0.   Cody Wissler followed up with a base hit up the middle to make it 6-0 and stole second during the next at-bat.   Ruiz Jr. would then come up again to bat that inning and hit a base hit to CF to bring in Wissler to make it 7-0.  Granillo would hit an infield single to 2B to keep the inning alive, but Spencer Long struck out looking to finally end the frame for the Warriors in the fourth.  

The Warriors would add two more runs in the 5th inning to make it a 9-0 game.  Alarcon had a one out walk and Folgers hit a double to center field to put runners on second and third base.  Beserra would come up big again with a two-out double to the right-center gap to drive in both baserunners.  

ECC added their final two runs of the game in the 6th inning.  Ruiz Jr. led the inning off with a base hit up the middle.  Spencer Long followed with a single to center field to put runners on the corners.  Nakawake walked to load the bases before Alarcon was hit by a pitch to bring in the runner on third base to make it 10-0. Palmer would single through the right side with two outs to make it an 11-0 game, and that capped the scoring for the Warriors.  

The Warriors will return to action on Saturday in a rematch against Pasadena City College. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 at Brookside Park's Jackie Robinson Memorial Field.
