The Warriors Lose Their Winning Streak, Fall To SBCC 4-9

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Warriors (8-1) lost their 8 game winning streak this afternoon against the Santa Barbara Vaqueros (2-5). The Warriors gave up a grand slam in the 5th inning that changed the momentum of the game.

The first four innings started slow, as the score was 0-0. The Warriors got on the scoreboard in the top of the 5th off of a 2-run single from Trevor Casanova, scoring Ryan Eastburn and Hunter Lewis. The Vaqueros responded in the bottom of the 5th and loaded the bases. Cassius Hamm walked Griffin Hennessey, bringing in the first run for the Vaqueros. Aaron Portee hit a grand slam to right-center, and the Vaqueros took the lead, 5-2. The Vaqueros then had a double, followed by a 2-run single gaining 7 runs in the inning. Trevor Talpas came in to pitch in the middle of the 5th inning, relieving Hamm.

Still determined to come back, the Warriors scored two more runs in the top of the 7th. Angel Mora singled brining in Ty Conrad. Hunter Lewis then hit a home run. The Warriors finished the top of the inning, 4-7. 

In the bottom of the 8th inning, the Vaqueros loaded the bases again and scored two more runs on a stray pickoff throw to 1st. The Warriors finished the game 4-9.

Hunter Lewis went 3 for 4 – 2B, HR, 1 RBI, 2 R. Brady Dorn went 2 for 4, BB. Trevor Casanova was 1 for 5 with 2 RBI. Trevor Talpas pitched 3.2 innings, allowing 4 hits, 2 runs, 0 errors, 3 strikeouts and 4 walks.

Coach Nathan Fernley commented, "The 5th inning was really the difference. We just did not throw enough strikes or make enough plays."

The Warriors play tomorrow at Saddleback College at 3pm. On Friday, they face the Vaqueros again at 2:00 at East LA College (due to weather).
