Diaz, Sehenuk Named NATYCAA Scholar-Athlete Team Honorable Mention

El Camino College soccer player Oliver Diaz and former cross country and track and field athlete Savannah Sehenuk were each named honorable mention to the inaugural National Alliance of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA) Scholar-Athlete Team, it was announced Monday.

At its 2019 Convention, the NATYCAA Officers approved an expanded Scholar-Athlete Awards Program, one which recognizes up to nine male and nine female honorees, one from each district in its membership. The district winners not only comprise the Scholar-Athlete team but are finalists for the NATYCAA Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award sponsored by Relation Insurance Solutions.

All remaining nominees receive Honorable Mention recognition.

To be eligible for the award, nominees must meet the following criteria: minimum 3.6 GPA on a 4.0 scale with a minimum of 36 semester hours or 45 quarter hours with a minimum of 24 semester/36 quarter hours at the nominating institution; participation in a minimum of one complete season of varsity competition at the nominating institution; outstanding athletics success; and outstanding qualities of leadership and citizenship. Spring sport athletes may be considered for nomination the following year.

Diaz played two seasons for the Warriors and started in all 41 games during that period. He had his best season as a sophomore, scoring seven goals to go along with four assists. His 18 points were second on the team and he tallied three game-winning goals as the Warriors went 14-3-5 on the season. Diaz was named to the 2019 CCCAA All-Region Team and is a two-time All-South Coast Conference Team selection, earning a First Team nod in 2019. Diaz was also named to the 2019 United Staet Coaches National Junior College Scholar All-American Second Team.

Sehenuk was a member of the Warriors track and field and cross country teams in 2017-18. As a freshman, she earned All-South Coast Conference honors and was the top finisher for the women four times. Her best finish was a third-place result at the Irvine Brubaker Invitational. As a sophomore, Sehenuk was named All-South Coast Conference, Second Team as she was the top finisher for the women twice.
