TORRANCE, Calif. – Sophomore Sonni Garcia led the way offensively and Sophia Caravello was outstanding in net as El Camino College squeaked past Rio Hondo 8-6 on Wednesday afternoon at the ECC Pool.

The Warriors and Roadrunners played a tightly contested match in which no team ever led by more than two goals. Despite how close the match was, the Warriors never trailed in the match as they were able to answer every time the Roadrunners would score and tie things up.

Garcia finished with three goals to lead the Warriors with Alexa Modry and Kat Reyes adding two goals apiece in the victory. Sophia Caravello was outstanding in goal as she kept the Roadrunners from ever taking the lead, making countless big saves in the victory.

Neither team was able to get on the board in the first period as both goalies smacked away every shot they faced in the opening frame.

The scoring opened in the second period as Garcia scored with 4:48 left in the period but, as would be the pattern throughout the match, the Roadrunners answered 10 seconds later to tie things up. Garcia and Andrea Baez would add two more goals in the period and ECC held a 3-2 edge going into halftime.

The Roadrunners tied it in the third before Alexa Mordry scored both of her goals 32 seconds apart to give ECC a 5-3 lead, a rare multi-goal lead in the match.

But the Roadrunners answered with the first two goals in the fourth period to tie things up again. Kat Reyes would then come through big time with consecutive goals to put ECC up 7-5 and they would hold on to score the victory.

The Warriors return to action for the second match of their current four-game homestand on Thursday with an evening tilt against Cuesta. The match is set to begin at 5:30 p.m.
