Garcia Leads Way as Women’s Water Polo Mounts Comeback at Rio Hondo

WHITTIER, Calif. – Sonni Garcia scored four times and El Camino College overcame a five-goal halftime deficit to defeat Rio Hondo, 8-7, Wednesday afternoon in the season opener at Rio Hondo College.

The Warriors (1-0) trailed by five goals after two periods but the defense held firm in the second half, keeping the Roadrunners (0-1) off the scoreboard in the final 16 minutes of action.

The offense took care of business in the second half, scoring four times in the third quarter to cut the deficit to one goal and then two more in the final period to complete the comeback.

Kate Wurth scored two goals with one assist while Ysabella Estrella and Megan Perez each tallied a goal on the day. Estrella and Andrea Sandoval each added one assist.

Acasia White posted three saves in the victory.

The Warriors will return to action next Wednesday with a South Coast Conference contest at Cerritos.
