Warriors Split Matches on Day One at Saddleback Invitational

El Camino College opened the first day of the Saddleback Invitational with a dominant victory over Southwestern and concluded the day with a narrow loss to Palomar.

ECC 17, Southwestern 6

The Warriors jumped all over Southwestern from the opening sprint, scoring eight times in the first quarter. They led by nine goals at halftime and would go on cruise to the victory. Six Warriors recorded multi-goal games, led by Nate Griffith and Jason Gottschalk with three apiece. Ryan Winkler, Joaquin Vargas, Kyle Thorne and Deshawn Roberts each scored two goals on the day. Roberts and Winkler also tied for the team lead with three assists apiece.

Both goalies saw action for ECC as Nicholas Elias scored the victory after recording four saves in the first half. Ryan Steck entered the pool in the second half and recorded five saves.

Palomar 10, ECC 6

The Warriors hung around with the Comets, trailing by just one goal at the half. But the Warriors were outscored 5-2 in the second half as the Comets pulled away for the victory. Jonas Fahrney and Matthew Thorne led the way with two goals each with Griffith and Ikaika Alluin also scoring for ECC. Elias played all four quarters and made 12 saves in the loss.

The Warriors will return to action Saturday afternoon with a pair of matches to conclude the Saddleback Invitational and the 2017 regular season. The Warriors face hosts Saddleback at 12:30 p.m. and then take on Grossmont at 4 p.m.
