Warriors Edged at Mount San Antonio in Overtime

WALNUT, Calif. – El Camino College held a one-goal lead late but could not hang on as the Warriors fell at Mount San Antonio 11-10 in overtime Wednesday afternoon at the Mt. SAC pool.

Matthew Thorne scored five times for ECC to lead all scorers in the match and Nicholas Elias made 10 saves on the day to keep the Warriors in contention.

Jason Gottschalk netted a pair while Sam Waters, Jonas Fahrney and Ryan Winkler each scored a goal. Kyle Thorne and Winkler led the team with two assists apiece.

For the Mounties, Roman Aceres scored four times while three other players scored twice. Jake Simmons turned away 15 Warriors shots and had two steals in net for the Mounties.

The Warriors were 3-for-9 on power plays on Wednesday while the Mounties were 2-for-7 with the man-advantage.

The Warriors had the upper hand early as they took a 3-0 lead after the first period thanks to two goals from Gottschalk and one from Winkler.

The Mounties responded in the second, scoring three of the four goals in the quarter to cut the Warriors advantage to one at halftime.

In the second half, the Warriors scored three times and took a 7-5 advantage into the fourth quarter but the Mounties outscored ECC 4-2 in the final period including the game-tying goal by Matthew Rauch with 1:52 left to send the game into overtime.

In the first overtime, Cristian Martinez scored with 1:21 left to put the Mounties ahead for the first time in the match. Roman Aceres then provided the insurance, scoring with 25 seconds left to give the Mounties a two-goal cushion after the first three minutes of extra time.

In the second overtime, the Warriors got a goal from Thorne with 1:05 left to trim the deficit to one, but the Warriors only managed one more shot on target in the period; a shot from Thorne that was turned away by Simmons to preserve the win for the Mounties.

The Warriors will return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 20 at Long Beach.
