Football Pulls Away Late in Win at Palomar

El Camino College went up two scores early and broke things open late in a 38-20 victory Saturday night against Palomar at Escondido High School.

The Warriors (6-2, 2-1) jumped out in front 14-0 in the first five minutes of the game against the Comets. Jerman Gotoy capped off a nine-play, 62-yard scoring drive with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Shawn Prejean to open the scoring and put ECC ahead 7-0.

The defense then blocked a punt on the ensuing Palomar possession and recovered at the Comets' 7-yard line. Gotoy would quickly run in a TD to make it 14-0 just 4:17 into the game.

The Comets kept things close, trailing 17-13 at halftime but ECC scored the first 14 points of the second half to open up an 18-point lead and they never looked back.

Gotoy finished the day going 12-for-18 for 158 yards and one touchdown while Keyshawn Dupree had five rushes for 57 yards and two TDs. The rushing attack paced the Warriors as they accumulated 173 yards rushing and four of the team's five touchdowns came via the ground game.

Logan Taylor and Justin Martz led the defense with six tackles apiece while Tony Dancy added five tackles and an interception in the victory.

The Warriors will wrap up their regular season road schedule on Saturday afternoon as they head to Fullerton for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
