Case Pitcher of the Year, Fernley Coach of the Year as Eleven Players Named to All-SCC Team

TORRANCE, Calif. --- Sophomore left-hander David Case was named the 2023 South Coast Conference Tri-Pitcher of the Year and head coach Nate Fernley earned coach of the year honors as the All-SCC Baseball Team was announced on Tuesday.

The Warriors nabbed two of the top awards and had 11 selections to the 2023 All-SCC Team overall along with one honorable mention.

Case was named the top pitcher in the conference alongside two other players and earned a spot on the All-SCC First Team. The ace of the Warriors' pitching staff, Case went 4-0 in eight conference starts. He tossed just 42 innings on the year but led the Warriors with 50 strikeouts and a 10.71 strikeout per nine innings average. Opposing batters hit just .211 and Case posted a 1.29 ERA.

Sophomores Pierce Kingston, Juan Carlos Camarena, Julio Camarena and Elijah Tolsma all joined Case on the All-SCC First Team.

Kingston was the Warriors' top arm out of the bullpen as he led all ECC pitchers with 15 appearances. He had the most innings pitched (37.2) of any pitcher without a start for the Warriors and he struck out 33 batters while posting a 1.67 ERA. Opposing batters hit .195 against him as he allowed just 25 hits and seven earned runs during the regular season. He posted a 5-2 overall record with two saves.

J.C. Camarena tied for the team lead with 49 hits and led the conference with a .386 batting average. He tallied 10 doubles and one triple at the dish while drawing 17 walks and striking out just 12 times. In addition, he played in 34 games for the Warriors, all behind the plate managing a pitching staff that led the state with a 3.40 ERA.

Julio Camarena made his second straight appearance on the All-SCC First Team after playing another excellent year at short for the Warriors. He played in 34 games and was third on the team with 45 hits including four doubles. He had 27 walks and just 14 strikeouts while tying for the team lead with 37 runs scored. He led the Warriors with 105 assists in 159 total chances at short.

Tolsma made his second straight appearance on the All-SCC team after a second-team selection in 2022 as a pitcher. This season, Tolsma did it with his bat and patrolling center field for the Warriors as he batted .312 in 36 total games. He had 39 hits including nine doubles, one triple and five home runs, which were the second most on the team. He was tied for fourth on the Warriors with 25 RB and his .520 slugging percentage was second on the team. While not seeing as much action on the mound this year as he did as a freshman, Tolsma did make five appearances with one start and went 1-0 with one save. He struck out 11 in 14 innings pitched.

The Warriors had six more players selected to the All-SCC Second Team with Daniel Murillo, Dylan Knowles and Ethan Felix all making repeat appearances on the All-SCC Team while Connor MeidrothJack Snyder and Jason Davis each made their first all-conference squad.

Snyder led the Warriors with 11 total starts on the mound and went undefeated on the year with a 5-0 record to go along with a 3.02 ERA. He struck out 44 batters in 62.2 innings pitched and allowed batters to hit .239 against him.  

Davis was the Warriors second option out of the bullpen as all 12 of his appearances during the regular season came in relief. He tossed 32 and 2/3 innings and allowed just four earned runs and 15 total hits on his way to a team-best 1.10 ERA. He struck out 43 hitters and was second on the team with a 11.9 strikeouts per nine innings average. The opposition hit just .140 against Davis during the regular season.

Meidroth played in 35 games for the Warriors in his freshman campaign and batted .306 overall with 41 hits. He had one home run and 19 RBI and posted a .427 on-base percentage thanks to 21 walks. He scored 31 runs and added six doubles in his first season with the Warriors. 

Murillo was a jack-of-all trades for the Warriors as he played numerous positions and was named the DH of the All-SCC Second Team. He hit .278 on the season with 44 hits in 38 games played. He was tied for second on the team with 10 doubles to go along with two triples and a home run. He was second on the team with 32 RBI and walked 23 times while stealing three bases.

Knowles played in 34 games for the Warriors and hit .304 with 41 hits including nine doubles, three triples and three home runs. He had 29 RBI and led the team with five stolen bases. His .429 on-base percentage was fourth on the team as were his 22 walks. He was also third on the Warriors with 34 runs scored.

Felix just missed out on his second straight first team selection but nabbed the first baseman spot on the All-SCC Second Team after playing in all 40 games this season. He was tied for the team lead with 49 hits and led the Warriors with seven home runs, 42 RBI, 12 doubles, five triples and 35 walks. His .594 slugging percentage was tops on the team and his .457 on-base percentage was second behind only J.C. Camarena.  

Brendan McAndrews was honorable mention after hitting .279 with five doubles and 16 RBI during the regular season. He tallied 36 total hits and scored 30 runs.

Fernley led the Warriors to a 28-12 overall record during the regular season and an 18-6 mark in SCC play for the sixth conference title in program history, the first since 2019 and first outright conference crown since 2010. It was Fernley's fourth SCC Coach of the Year Award (2019, 2010, 2007) in his 16th season as head coach at ECC.

The Warriors are the No. 11 seed in the upcoming 3C2A Baseball Southern California Regionals and will host No. 14 Mt. San Jacinto on Friday at Warrior Field.
