D’Angelo and Dorr Win Pairs Conference Title
WALNUT, Calif. --- El Camino College's top team of Bridget Dorr and Ryan D'Angelo claimed the 2024 South Coast Conference Pairs Championship on Saturday at the Mount San Antonio College Sand Courts.
The duo entered the two-day tournament as the No. 1 overall seed and were able to run the table with four straight wins over two days to claim the conference title. The duo is the first team to win the conference title since Fayth Rascon and Lauren McCarthy won the conference crown in 2022 at ECC. Dorr and D'Angelo are also the third Warriors pair to claim the SCC title since the conference was formed for beach volleyball in 2018.
The pair had a bye in the first round of the tournament on Friday and then swept past the No. 17 duo of Danika Iosua and Ryannah Gagau of Long Beach (21-8, 21-4) in their only match of day one.
On Saturday, Dorr and D'Angelo opened the day with a win in the quarterfinals over the No. 8 team of Candace Ceballos and Angelina Griego of Mt. SAC with another sweep (21-13, 21-6).
The victory set up a showdown with a familiar foe as the Warriors' No. 2 pair of Erica Griffiths and Sophia Ortiz, ranked No. 5 in the tournament, awaited the ECC No. 1 pair in the semifinals.
D'Angelo and Dorr continued to roll with a 2-0 (21-16, 21-16) victory over their teammates for a berth in the finals against No. 7 seed Tainea Allen and Mikayla Curry of Long Beach.
The Warriors' top pair lost their first set of the tournament in the opening frame of the finals but bounced back to win the final two sets to claim the title, 2-1 (11-21, 21-18, 15-12), marking the second time in three years that the Warriors claimed both the SCC team and pairs titles in the same year.
The Warriors will now have 10 days off before returning to action for the 3C2A Southern California Regionals, which they will host at ECC on April 30.
