Tanagawa, Giese and Ito Advance to CCCAA Quarterfinals

OJAI, Calif. – Freshman Riko Tanagawa is one of the final eight women standing in singles action while Lina Ito and Madi Giese are one of eight doubles teams left after day two of the CCCAA Women's Tennis State Championships Friday at the Ojai Valley Tennis Club in Ojai, Calif.

The Warriors had three singles competitors advance to day two but only Tanagawa was left when the day was over as Giese and Ito each lost in the Round of 32 and the Round of 16 respectively.

Tanagawa continued to roll at the tournament as she scored two more straight-set victories on Friday. She has yet to drop a set in three matches and has lost just six of 42 games on her way to the quarterfinals. She defeated Sophia Moeckelmann of Chabot College (6-0, 6-0) and Ashley Le of Irvine Valley (6-1, 6-3) on Friday and will face Miri Inoue of Orange Coast College, the No. 2 seed from Southern California, in Saturday's quarterfinals at 9:30 a.m.

Giese was the first Warriors singles competitor to fall on Friday as she lost to Stephanie Huang of Chabot College, the No. 2 seed from Northern California. Giese managed to win just two games in a 6-2, 6-0 defeat, ending her singles career at El Camino College.

Lina Ito cruised to victory in her Round of 32 match, defeating Camryn Mason of Orange Coast in straight sets. But Ito was rewarded by facing the No. 1 seed from Southern California in the Round of 16 and she could not advance, falling to Fullerton's Yu Seung Suh 6-1, 6-1.

In doubles action, Tanagawa and partner Amanda Vitanatchi lost in the Round of 32 to Lisa Bargeman and Stephanie Huang of Chabot College, the No. 2 seed from Northern California.

But Giese and Ito were stellar once again on Friday, advancing to Saturday's quarterfinals with wins over Insun Janigian and Roxy Sandoval of Fresno (6-2, 6-0) and Karla Munoz and Claudia Stepien of College of the Desert (6-2, 6-0). They will take on the No. 6 seed from Southern California in Maxelle Bernie and Torrey Mateljan of Riverside on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
