Women’s Tennis Heads to Ojai for CCCAA Tennis Championships

CCCAA State Championships Bracket

The El Camino College women's tennis team will be well represented this week as the California Community College Athletic Association Women's Tennis Championships get underway on Thursday at the Ojai Valley Tennis Club in Ojai, Calif.

The Warriors, who claimed the 2019 South Coast Conference title, will send three singles competitors and two doubles squads to the CCCAA State Championships.

Freshman Riko Tanagawa is the Warriors' highest ranked singles competitor after grabbing the No. 6 seed for Southern California. She was the No. 1 singles player for the Warriors on the year and was the No. 1 seed at the South Coast Conference tournament. Tanagawa went 10-3 overall in singles play in dual matches this season.

Lina Ito comes in as the No. 9 seed for Southern California after going 9-4 in singles competition in dual matches during the season. She advanced to the SCC semifinals before falling to eventual conference champion Moa Lindstrom of Cerritos.

Madi Giese drew the No. 14 seed for Southern California after posting a runner-up finish as the SCC Tournament. Overall, Giese finished the year with a 9-3 record in singles play in dual matches.

All three singles competitors earned a bye for the Round of 128 and will start the tournament in the Round of 64. Tanagawa awaits the winner of the Round of 128 matchup between Nicole Villarta of College of the Canyons and Insun Janigian of Fresno City College. Tanagawa's match is slated to begin at approximately 11 a.m. on Thursday.

Giese draws a Round of 64 matchup against Mary Dimagio of Shasta College at 9:30 a.m. while Ito will take on Mailinh Troung of Foothill College. That match is also slated to begin at 9:30 a.m.

In the doubles bracket, reigning back-to-back South Coast Conference champions Ito and Giese drew the No. 2 seed in Southern California. They went 11-3 in dual matches this season and stormed through the SCC Tournament to claim the title. Giese and Ito get a bye in the first round and await the winners of the Round of 128 matchup between Ashley Castro/Savanna Schreiner of Fullerton and Nayeli Carmona/Moy Truong of Mission College. The match is set to start at approximately 3:30 p.m.

The duo of Tanagawa and Amy Vitanatchi earned the No. 15 seed in Southern California to round out the ECC participants. They get a bye and will take on Roxy Layden and Ghita Zhari of Santa Rosa at 2:30 p.m.

The CCCAA Women's Tennis State Championships will run from Thursday through Sunday with singles and doubles champions crowned on Sunday.
