Women’s Basketball Opens Conference Play with Victory

TORRANCE, Calif. – El Camino College used a solid third quarter to pull away and eventually score a 50-36 victory over Compton in the South Coast Conference, South Division opener Wednesday night at the ECC Gym Complex.

The Warriors (6-12, 1-0) had three players score in double figures and outscored the Tartars (8-11, 0-1) 30-15 in the second half to score the victory.

Ashley Nguyen led the way for ECC with 15 points with Jesse Hoffsmith adding 12 points, six rebounds and three assists. Taylor Hart added 11 points and seven rebounds while Alexia Mason grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.

For the Tartars, Andranae Powns led the way with 12 points and Niea Ulmer grabbed a game-high 18 rebounds in the loss.

The Warriors overcame a 46-44 rebounding deficit to the Tartars including a 19-10 edge on the offensive glass to score the win. The Tartars shot just 17.2 percent from the field and the Warriors forced 20 turnovers, scoring 12 points off the Compton miscues.

The first half finished off with a sputter as the Warriors shot just 20 percent in the second quarter, allowing the Tartars to take a one-point lead at halftime, Compton's only lead of the game.

But the Warriors outscored Compton 19-5 in the third to open up a double-digit lead and they never looked back.

The Warriors will return to action Friday on the road as they take on L.A. Harbor. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.
