Big Inning Enough as Warriors Hang On to Beat Citrus

TORRANCE, Calif. – El Camino College capitalized on miscues from visiting Citrus all day and pulled out a 6-5 non-conference victory Friday afternoon at the ECC Softball Field.

The Warriors (24-6) nabbed their ninth straight in and 19th in the last 20 games thanks to six unearned runs in the second inning and some base-running miscues by the visiting Owls (17-16) on Friday.

Jasmine Krauss had the big hit for the Warriors with the game-tying two-run single in the second and then scored the go-ahead run on a stolen base and throwing error. Krauss also turned one of the Warriors three double plays on defense, catching a fly ball in right and then doubling off the runner at first base after she went to second base before the ball was caught, to end the game and secure the win.

Clarissa Chiquete scored the win in the circle as she allowed four runs, three earned, on nine hits in six innings of work. Maisie Weishoff got the save, recording the final three outs in the seventh and leaving the game-tying run on second base.

The Owls bats were hot to start the game as they took a 2-0 lead with six hits in the first two innings of play.

In the bottom half of the inning, Alyssa Wing reached on an error at second base to lead off the inning. Kassidy Robinson reached after getting hit by a pitch with one out.

A groundout advanced the runners and then Krauss lined a pitch off the third baseman's glove for a single, bringing in both runners to tie the game. Krauss would steal second base and then on her steal of third, the catcher threw the ball away which allowed Krauss to score the go-ahead run.

With the bases empty, the Warriors continued to punish the Owls with four more hits and three more runs in the frame to take a 6-2 lead. All of the runs were unearned and the Warriors would not score in any other inning.

Chiquete kept the Owls off the scoreboard for the next three innings before a fluke play in right field to start off the seventh ignited the Citrus offense.

Catcher Brooke Fuss led off the frame with a flyball to right, where Krauss seemed to camp under it for the out. But the Warriors right fielder lost the ball in the sun, allowing it to drop for a hit. Pinch-hitter Bryn De La O then reached on an error by Wing at short. The runners advanced on a wild pitch, putting an end to Chiquete's day in the circle.

Weishoff came in to pitch and surrendered a two-run single to Giavanna Muenz to cut the Warriors lead in half.

Shania Carlin walked and then Weishoff finally recorded the first out of the frame with a strikeout. Jacquelyn Preciado would single up the middle in the next at bat to bring in another run and bring the Owls within one at 6-5.

Weishoff then induced a flyout to right field from Valerie Ortiz for the second out. On the play, Preciado took off for second on contact and was standing on the bag when Krauss hauled in the fly ball.

Krauss threw to first where the ball got past Annie Adamos on the bag but Ashley Machado was backing up the play and had plenty of time to recover the ball and make the throw to double off Preciado and lock down the victory for the Warriors.

The Warriors will return to action Tuesday with a South Coast Conference, South Division contest at Compton College. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
