Men’s Water Polo Splits on Opening Weekend

El Camino College opened the 2019 campaign with a split of its first four matches as the team travelled to the North vs. South Tournament hosted by Merced College.

EL CAMINO COLLEGE 14, MODESTO 10

The Warriors opened the season with a 14-10 victory over Modesto thanks to freshman Cole Allyn's five-goal performance. The team was excellent on the man-advantage, scoring on 50 percent of their 6-on-5 opportunities in the match. Nate Griffith had a solid return to the squad after a year away from the sport, scoring three times in the victory to go along with one assist. Brandon Guerrero, Joseph Banda and Seth Ulrich each chipped in with two goals while Brandon Soto made 11 saves in net.

SIERRA 16, EL CAMINO COLLEGE 5

It was a tough go of it for the Warriors in match two on Friday as the they trailed 11-3 at halftime and never recovered. The Warriors were held scoreless in the first quarter and had to battle uphill the rest of the way. Allyn added three more goals to lead the team with Griffith and Banda adding a goal apiece. Soto made six saves and Ali Ahmed made three saves.

EL CAMINO COLLEGE 12, MERCED 10

The Warriors returned to work on Saturday with a tight victory over the hosts. Griffith erupted for five goals while Allyn added five of his own. The teams were tied 4-4- in the first quarter but the Warriors outscored Merced 5-0 in the second quarter to pull away and eventually come away victorious.

Soto made seven saves and Ahmed added two in net.

AMERICAN RIVER 16, EL CAMINO COLLEGE 9

Griffith capped off an impressive Saturday with four goals and Allyn added two but the Warriors could never track down American River and would leave the tournament with a 2-2 record. Soto made five saves in the finale and Ahmed added two.
