Baseball To Host Playoffs at Warrior Field

BRACKET

TORRANCE, Calif. - El Camino College was seeded as the No. 2 team in Southern California which means they will host in every round they qualify for in the California Community College Baseball State Championship Playoffs, it was announced Sunday.

Orange Coast College was named the No. 1 seed in Southern California. Both the Warriors and the Pirates will find out their opponents after Tuesday's single-elimination games between No.15 Pasadena City/No. 18 Citrus and No. 16 La Mission/No.17 Southwestern.  The Pirates will host the lowest seeded team that wins a play-in game while the Warriors will get the second lowest seeded victor.  The Warriors went 2-0 this season vs the Pasadena City Lancers, 3-0 vs the LA Mission Eagles, and did not play against either Citrus or Southwestern.

The Warriors and their not yet determined opponent will start a best-of-three series beginning Friday, May 3 at Warrior Field at 2 p.m. The best-of-three series resumes Saturday morning at 11 a.m. with the opponent as the designated home team with game three getting underway 30 minutes after the conclusion of the previous game, if necessary. The Warriors would be the home team in a third game.

The Warriors won a share of the South Coast Conference-South Division title, splitting the division title with Long Beach City College. On a wild Friday afternoon where the Warriors needed a few results to fall their way, almost everything went perfect for El Camino.  The Warriors could only control their own destiny and took care of business with a 4-2 win over LA Harbor. Long Beach only needed to win to secure the conference title outright but they couldn't hold a 4-3 lead over Compton and allowed Compton to score a couple runs in the 8th inning to take a 7-4 lead and were only able to rally for one run in the 9th and ended up losing 7-5.  Riverside Community College was the No. 2 team in So Cal and blew an 8-4 lead against Cypress. After leading 8-4 through seven innings, Cypress scored five unanswered runs in the last two innings to win 9-8. And lastly, the No.1 team in So Cal, Orange Coast College had to rally from a 6-4 deficit in the Bottom of the 9th inning vs Santa Ana.

The Warriors posted a 32-6 overall record including a 15-2 record at Warrior Field this season.  The Warriors finished the season as the No. 6 team in the CCCSIA State Baseball Poll and No. 3 team in Southern California.

On Thursday, April 18 2019, El Camino College student and baseball team member Sladen John Mohl was killed in a traffic accident involving three cars Thursday evening in Torrance.  Sladen was a pedestrian and died at the scene.

El Camino College baseball head coach Nate Fernley has started the "Sladen Mohl Memorial Fund" to aid Sladen's family in covering upcoming costs and arrangements.

"Sladen Mohl was a beloved friend, son, family member and teammate to many people across the country. Sladen left us far too early, but has left a life-long impact on every individual that he has come in contact with. We are raising funds to help support his loving family with the upcoming costs and arrangements. Sladen was from Alaska so we would like to bring him home. All donations will be going directly to Sladen's mother for the expenses."
