El Camino College Athletics Earns First Ever Top-10 Standing in Final NATYCAA Cup Rankings

2018-19 NATYCAA Cup Final Rankings

The 2018-19 year was a banner season for El Camino College athletics as the Warriors finished seventh overall amongst community colleges in California in the 2018-19 National Alliance of Two-Year Collegiate Administrators (NATYCAA) Cup.

"This accomplishment is incredible and unprecedented for our athletics program," ECC Athletics Director Colin Preston said. "Posting our first ever top-10 should be a great source of pride for everyone associated with our department and school. It shows the hard work our coaches, staff and student-athletes have put in and that work has produced great achievements and success on the field of play."

The Warriors accumulated 130 points overall, the third best score for teams from Southern California. Mount San Antonio secured its ninth NATYCAA Cup with 162 points overall with Riverside coming in second place with 159 points. Fresno City (152), Sierra (146.5), American River (143.5) and San Joaquin Delta (143) rounded out the top-six ahead of ECC.

Colleges are awarded points based on their teams' final positions in post-conference competition with state championships worth the most points (20). Each college's top-five men's and top-five women's team results count toward the school's overall point total. Complete standings, scoring criteria, and history of the NATYCAA Cup is available on the CCCAA website, https://www.cccaasports.org/NATYCAA/index

First established in 2003-04 the NATYCAA Cup recognizes the outstanding overall programs in two-year colleges from throughout the entire country. Each college is allowed to score points from their top-five programs per gender in the highest level of competition within their division. Each sport is treated equally so that the champ ion of each sport earns 20 points towards their NATYCAA Cup total. Second place finishes earn 19 points, third place earns 18 points, etc.

This year, ECC fielded a number of successful teams in the fall, winter and spring. Amongst the highest scorers were the men's cross country team (19) and baseball team (19). Both teams finished as state runners-up with Carson Bix winning the individual state championship in cross country.

The men's track and field chipped in with 16 points as they posted a fifth-place finish at the CCCAA State Championships, highlighted by Qwintin Workman's two runner-up finishes in the long jump and the 400m hurdles.

The football team (14.5) and women's volleyball team (14.5) each advanced to the CCCAA State Playoffs with the football team advancing to the regional semifinals while the women's volleyball team made it to the CCCAA State Championships as one of the last eight teams standing.

Those were just some of the highlights this season as ECC fielded five conference championship-winning teams (football, women's volleyball, women's basketball, women's tennis, men's volleyball) along with a number of individual conference champions in track and field, cross country and men's and women's swimming.

This is the 16th year that NATYCAA has sponsored a State Association's division. Now in its 30th year, NATYCAA is the professional organization of two year college athletics administrators and membership is open to all two year institutions from throughout the country. NATYCAA is administered by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), which is in its 54th year.
