Warriors Drop Both Matches at Annual Three-Way Tournament

TORRANCE, Calif. – El Camino College hosted its annual ECC Three-Way Tournament featuring College of the Canyons and Grossmont and came up short in both games with losses against both teams on Saturday afternoon at the ECC Gymnasium

SEPT. 4 – COLLEGE OF CANYONS 3, EL CAMINO COLLEGE 1

In the first match of the day the Warriors fell to the Cougars in four sets 25-22, 25-15, 25-27, 25-17.  Brea Rutledge led the team with 14 kills and hit .282 for the match. Jaden Zabala had 19 assists and Nofoali'i Selu had 15 assists.  Diana Enriquez recorded 11 digs.  The Cougars had three players with double-digit kills and had a team .295 kill percentage to the Warrior's .172 kill percentage.  

In the opening frame the match was tied at 13 all until Canyons went on a 5-0 run to give them an 18-13 lead.  The Warriors got as close as 24-22 but ultimately couldn't overcome the Cougars lead. In the second set, the Cougars pulled away early with an 8-2 lead.  They pulled away even further with an 18-7 lead and held on for the 25-15 lead.

The third set was a close one throughout the match with both sides tying each other up at 23, 24, and 25.  However an attacking error by Canyons and a service ace by Brea Rutledge sealed the Warriors for the Warriors. In the fourthh and final set the Cougars took the lead after being tied at 6-6 and never relinquished the lead en route to a 25-17 win in the fourth set.

SEPT. 4 – GROSSMONT 3, EL CAMINO COLLEGE 0

In the final match of the day, the Warriors lost in straight sets to the Grossmont Griffins 25-21, 25-22, 25-15.  Brea Rutledge led the team with 9 kills.  Nofoali'i Selu and Jayden Zabala each had 9 assists.  

Alexcis Morris led the Griffins with 16 kills and a .696 kill percentage.  The Griffins had a .315 kill percentage to the Warriors .066 kill percentage.

The opening frame was close until Grossmont opened up a 18-12 lead.  The Warriors were able to claw back into the set to make it a 20-19 game but ultimately Grossmont prevailed 25-21.  The second started great for the Warriors as they opened up a 14-7 lead.  However a timeout by Grossmont swung momentum back to the Griffins and they were able to eventually tie it at 18-18.  They opened a 3-point lead over the Warriors at 23-20 and the Warriors were able to get within 2 points at 24-22 but the Griffins won the set on a kill by Alexcis Morris.

In the third and final set after being tied at 3-3 Grossmont would lead the rest of the game en route to a 25-15 win.

The Warriors are back in action on Wednesday September 8th on the road at Moorpark.  First serve is set for 6:00 PM
